Muhi-ud-Din Mahammad (3 November 1618 – 3 March 1707), also known as Aurangzeb, was the Mughal Empire's 6th emperor, and its last effective one. He became the Mughal Emperor after killing his older brothers and imprisoning his father Shah Jahan and older sister Jahanara. His reign lasted for 49 years from 1658 until his death in 1707
As he was India's most controversial monarch, historians have argued over whether Aurangzeb was an orthodox Muslim fanatic or a more pragmatic and nuanced ruler.
