Baltimore is the largest independent city (not belonging to a county) in the United States and the largest city and cultural center of the U.S. state of Maryland. The city is located in central Maryland along the tidal portion of the Patapsco River, an arm of the Chesapeake Bay. Founded in 1729, Baltimore is the largest U.S. seaport in the mid-atlantic and is situated closer to major Midwestern markets than any other major seaport on the East Coast.
Baltimore in Trail of Glory[]
Baltimore was a strategic city for the United States during the War of 1812. It was briefly a planned target invasion for the British, but the Battle of the Capitol altered those plans.
In August, 1814, British troops under the command of General Robert Ross landed in Maryland. They marched on the capital city, Washington, with the intent of taking the city and burning the government buildings.
Patrick Driscol and Anthony McParland were staying in lodging house in Baltimore in August, 1814, when word came that Washington was about to be attacked by the British.
