Location of Berlin relative to Europe and modern Germany.

Berlin (/bɜrˈlɪn/; German pronunciation: [bɛɐ̯ˈliːn]) is the capital city of Germany and one of the 16 states of Germany. With a population of 3.5 million people, Berlin is Germany's largest city and is the second most populous city proper and the seventh most populous urban area in the European Union. Located in northeastern Germany, it is the center of the Berlin-Brandenburg Metropolitan Region, which has 5.9 million residents.

Berlin in 1632[]

In the 1630s, Berlin was the capital of Brandenburg. It was not yet one of Germany's major cities, and was considered a poor backwater.

In January of 1636, Axel Oxenstierna attempted to make Berlin the new capital of the United States of Europe, but that attempt ended with Oxenstierna's death.
