Amalie Elisabeth of Hanau-Münzenberg (1602-1651) was Landgravine consort and Regent of Hesse-Kassel. Daughter of Philipp Ludwig II of Hanau-Münzenberg and Countess Catharina Belgica of Nassau. Married in 1619 to landgrave William V, Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel. Regent from 1637 until 1650 as the guardian of her under age son William VI, Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel, a role she filled with impressive skill managing to not only steer Hesse-Kassel safely through the Thirty Years War but to gain both territory and political clout.

Amalie Elisabeth in 1632[]

Amalie Elisabeth, along with her husband William V, was among the prominent leaders of the Crown Loyalist Party. They were counted among the leaders of the Crown Loyalists' moderate wing. They were also old and close friends of Wilhelm Wettin.

After William V's death in 1635, she realized that newspaper reports she'd been reading made no sense, given what she knew of Wilhelm Wettin, unless she assumed that Axel Oxenstierna was keeping the USE's army out of the country, and bleeding the First and Second Divisions in winter siege lines. She also realized that the reported movements of certain nobles and notables she knew made no sense unless they were actually going to a conclave of some sort, one to which she had not been invited.
