Croatia (kroh-AY-shə; Croatian: Hrvatska, Serbo-Croatian pronunciation: [xř̩ʋaːtskaː]), officially the Republic of Croatia (Croatian: Republika Hrvatska) is a country at the crossroads of Central and Southeast Europe, on the Adriatic Sea. Its capital Zagreb forms one of the country's primary subdivisions, along with twenty counties. Croatia has an area of 56,594 square kilometres (21,851 square miles) and a population of 4.28 million, most of whom are Roman Catholics.

Croatia in 1632[]

When Grantville arrived in 1631, the Kingdom of Croatia was an administrative division (kingdom) within the Habsburg Monarchy It included only a small north-western part of present-day Croatia around Zagreb, and a small strip of coastland around Rijeka; much of what is present-day Croatia was at least nominally controlled by either Venice or the Ottoman Empire.

The Kingdom was a part of the Lands of the Crown of St. Stephen, but at that time, the King of Hungary was [[Ferdinand III, Holy Roman Emperor (1632)|Ferdinand III], son of the Holy Roman Empire (1632)Holy Roman Emperor, Ferdinand II.
