Croats are a South Slavic ethnic group mostly living in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and nearby countries. Croats are noted for their culture, which throughout the ages, has been variously influenced by different cultural circles. The strongest influences came from Central Europe and the Mediterranean, where, at the same time, Croats gave their contribution. The Croats are predominantly Catholic and their language is Croatian.

Croats in 1632[]

In the summer of 1632, Albrecht von Wallenstein covertly dispatched a cavalry regiment of Croat mercenaries to attack the time-displaced American town of Grantville in order to destroy its base of technological and historical information, therefore impeding the New United States from gaining any significance in Europe. The Croats were given the common, crude impression that they were to annihilate a town full of "Jews". However, Gustavus Adolphus (under the guise of Captain Gars) caught wind of the Croats and led a cavalry of Laplanders and Finns to intercept the raid.

Fortunately, Grantville became aware of the pending attack when Jeff Higgins saved Rebecca Abrabanel from three Croat scouts. The entire town mobilized and won a one-sided massacre against the Croats at the middle of downtown.

However, another portion of the raiders attacked Grantville High School, which was defended primarily by skilled marksman Julie Sims who easily sniped many of the raiders without a miss. Ultimately the raid was crushed by the combined forces of Grantville and Gustavus Adolphus. The surviving and defeated mercenaries that were unable to escape the town were promptly massacred.
