Date Masamune (伊達政宗, September 5, 1567 - June 27, 1636) was a well-known Japanese daimyo from the Azuchi-Momoyama period through early Edo period. He was an incredibly talented tactician, and was a patron of culture along with being sympathetic to Christian missionaries and traders in Japan.

He was also known as the dokuganryū (独眼竜), or the "one-eyed dragon" because of his missing his right eye. Though he lost use of it due to catching smallpox as a child, many stories abound of how he lost it completely; they range from Masamune plucking it out himself when it was pointed out as a liability, to letting his trusted retainer Katakura Kojūrō gouge it out.

Date Masamune In 1632[]

Date Masamune was appointed the Grand Governor of New Nippon, parts of California where exiled kirishitans were sent, by the shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu. As he and his children left for New Nippon along with the First Fleet, Date and his son Munesane began to talk about potential leadership problems.
