Diego was a Spanish Catholic mercenary under the command of Ludwig. Hans Richter witnessed how sadistic Diego was. Indeed, Diego was often given the task for torturing prisoners. He thought the Spanish Inquisition was far superior to the Roman Inquistion, and adherred to the Spanish philosophy of limpieza: pure blood, free from Jewish taint.
Diego participated in the Battle of the Crapper where he was gravely wounded by the Americans' firearms. He managed to crawled away from the field and was founded by Gretchen Richter and Jeff Higgins. Despite his wounds, the arrogant Diego demanded Gretchen to get him water. With Higgns acting as a look-out, Gretchen killed Diego by stabbing him in through the ear and in the brain. His death was considered a blessing to the women he'd abused. His death was ultimately justified by Grantville's Police Chief Dan Frost and Mike Stearns. While Frost was concerned about this clear act of homicide and considered arresting Gretchen, he relented, realzing that any jury would return a verdict of justifiable homicide, and further rationalizing that the crime had taken place outside his jurisdiction.
Diego had a concubine before his death. He forced her to begin carrying a looted bedframe, even though he had no use for it. When she learned from Gretchen Richter Diego was dead, the woman repeatedly thanked God through her tears.
