Dolley Payne Todd Madison (1768–1849) was the wife of the fourth President of the United States, James Madison, and was First Lady of the United States from 1809 to 1817. She also occasionally acted as First Lady during the administration of the widower Thomas Jefferson.

Dolley Madison's personality stands in stark contrast to her husbands. A vivacious woman, Dolley Madison soon became the center of Washington, D.C.'s society. During the War of 1812, Dolley Madison oversaw the removal of several important documents and objects of art from the White House in advance of the British attack.

Dolley Madison had fled the British advance on Washington on August 24, 1814. She was not present when Captain Sam Houston successfully defended the Capitol. She returned to the city on August 25, and sponsored a victory celebration that very night.
