Elisabeth of Lorraine (1574–1635), also Elisabeth Renata of Lorraine, was an a Duchess and Electress consort of Bavaria.

She was a daughter of Charles III, Duke of Lorraine in his marriage to Claude of Valois. In Nancy 9 February 1595 she married her cousin Maximilian I, Elector of Bavaria. Their marriage was childless due to Elisabeth's sterility, which was a cause of suffering. Her relationship to her spouse was, however, otherwise described as good and harmonious. Elisabeth is described as a very devout Catholic, who spent a lot of her time on her religious duties, and became known for her ascetic life style. Newly married, she was seen as vivid and jolly, but she became more melancholic and depressive with age. Maximilian gave Elisabeth no political influence or tasks whatsoever, but she spent a great deal of effort on charity. On January 4, 1635[1], she died after a long period of illness.

Elisabeth of Lorraine in 1632[]

In the new timeline created by the arrival of Grantville, Elisabeth's illness took a different turn. Rather than dying of cancer in January of 1635, she died of pneumonia in January of 1634. It was known that she had cancer, and both she and Maximilian knew from up-time sources that she would die from it in 1635. They both accepted that, and so her "unscheduled" death had a profound effect on Maximilian.
