Lady Elizabeth Wycliffe was the lady-in-waiting of Squire Dafydd Jones, who known her her since they were children. As an adult, Lady Elizabeth was also courted by Jones and Lord Sir Anthony Marshall, which produced stiff competition between the two men.
In August 1635, Lady Elizabeth was dining with Jones and her father Lord Henry Wycliffe, who didn't believe Jones could support Elizabeth, when a substantial explosion was felt. When the group investigated they learned that Jones's friend Harold and five other workmen were killed while constructing a steam engine, which they hoped they could use to reopen Jones' flooded copper mine. After Jones was consoled by Lord Wycliffe, Elizabeth was escorted home with her father as Jones refocused on cleaning the disaster.
On the way home, Lady Elizabeth surprised her father by announcing her intent to marry Jones, especially after she saw how he valued Harold and the workmen who perished in the explosion over the complete loss of the copper mine and the steam engine. Jones reminded Elizabeth of her father in that instant.
