Ferdinand was one Heinrich Schmidt's lieutenants. Prior to the Battle of Jena, he was convinced that the women in the army, including Julie Sims, would panic at the first shot. Instead, Sims easily picked off several mounted attackers. When confronted by Schmidt after the battle, Ferdinand began cheering Julie's name.
