Francisco Nasi (b. 1605) was the grandson of Joseph Nasi, and an important figure at the court of the sultan of the Ottoman Empire. However, with the arrival of Grantville, the canny Nasi switched allegiances and became a critical political adviser to the emerging United States of Europe.
Arrival in Grantville[]
Nasi was part of the illustrious Abrabanel family. Shortly after Balthazar Abrabanel and his daughter Rebecca joined the community of Grantville, they began reaching out to their extended family for resources to help the community thrive. In November, 1631, Nasi personally journeyed to Grantville. Unlike his cousins Samuel and Moses Abrabanel, both of whom were European, Nasi was not shocked or overwhelmed by the customs and technology of the 20th century town. He quickly jumped on the offer of Grantville to welcome all Jews. While Nasi was quite powerful in the Ottoman Empire, relative to his family in Europe, he also realized that his success was at the whim of the reigning sultan. Thus, even if the other branches of the family were hesitant, the Turkish branch was more than willing to financially back and support Grantville. His only condition was that Rebecca Abrabanel and Michael Stearns set an actual date for their wedding.[1]
