Greg Ferrara was the head of the science department of Grantville High School. After the Ring of Fire, Ferrara confirmed at a public meeting that Grantville was trapped in the past with no way of getting home. When Mike Stearns became chairman of the Grantville Emergency Committee, he selected Ferrara for the cabinet.
Ferrara was an early advocate for a nascent army and the inclusion of young volunteers. His calm pragmatism disarmed the initial opposition of Ed Piazza and Melissa Mailey.
Ferrara was appointed to assist James Nichols in medical and sanitation matters. He was also the unofficial "Minister of the Arms Complex". In this capacity, he and his students built homemade rockets, which were successfully used at the Battle of the Crapper.
Eventually, he became the director of the Grantville Research Committee, and the technological adviser to Mike Stearns.
