Harry Lefferts (Captain, USE Army, CO Commandos) was a rough and tumble union organizer and troubleshooter from Grantville. When the Ring of Fire transported the town into the past, Lefferts became the director of Mike Stearns' protective detail and the head the United States of Europe's special operations (commando) team.
The Ring of Fire[]
Lefferts and his best friend Darryl McCarthy joined the posse that formed around Stearns and Police Chief Dan Frost in the minutes after the Ring of Fire event. After Frost was injured and deputized everyone, Lefferts continued followed Stearns' lead. Lefferts surprised Stearns by producing a sawed-off shotgun. Lefferts and the posse fought the Battle of the Farm House, and rescued both Balthazar Abrabanel and his daughter, Rebecca.
In the days that followed, Lefferts was a vocal supporter of Michael Stearns. He joined the nascient Grantville military. His sense of humor and tendency towards flamboyancy were on display at the Battle of the Wartburg, where he played several classic rock songs through the night as part of an act of psychological warfare against Spanish forces occupying Wartburg Castle.
However, Lefferts was still young, as illustrated by his inability to see why Albrecht von Wallenstein had targeted Grantville High School, and his desire to build up the NUS's defenses.
Rise[]
During the Siege of Amsterdam, Harry accompanied Anne Jefferson and Adam Olearius through siege lines to pose for a painting by Rembrandt, as part of the diplomatic exchanges between the Spanish and Dutch. He and his team later acquired 3 of the 4 paintings by the Hals brothers and Rembrandt of Anne which were used to create Dutch stamps of the new United Provinces postal service. Harry and team sold the paintings at quite a profit to a French buyer to finance their next mission in England.
In 1634, Harry's team was given the task of rescuing the USE's embassy imprisoned in the Tower of London. To this end, Lefferts' team blew up the Globe Theatre and London Bridge to create a distraction. Lefferts then rescued not only the Americans, but Oliver Cromwell, who'd been pre-emptively imprisoned on the order of Charles I.
This brash mission spread Lefferts' reputation throughout Europe. In Italy, many wealthy and otherwise idle younger sons of noblemen emulated Lefferts' style of dress and personal mannerisms. They came to be known as lefferti.
In 1635, with one successful rescue mission under his belt, Lefferts was tasked with saving various Americans under arrest in Rome.

In June of 1635, Lefferts and his team suffered their first serious setback, when the Spaniard Pedro Dolor used their habit of careful advance reconnaissance against them. Dolor successfully created the illusion that the insula Mattei, where Frank and Giovanna Stone were being held, was undermanned. Lefferts and his crew planned a raid based on that, only to find that they had been anticipated and that a much larger force was lying in wait for them. They were able to withdraw, but not without taking losses. During that withdrawal, Harry began to realize that he had been buying into his own legend, and discarded his trademark sunglasses as a sign of accepting humility.
