John Brown (1800–1859) was an Americanabolitionist who advocated and practiced armed insurrection as a means to end all slavery. He led the Pottawatomie Massacre in 1856 in Bleeding Kansas and the unsuccessful raid at Harpers Ferry in 1859. He was hung shortly after the Harpers Ferry event.
In 1824, John Brown and his brother, Solomon Brown, led an abolitionist party that saved the Parker family from slave-catchers. The Browns joined the Parkers in leaving the United States and joining the Confederacy of the Arkansas.
