John Pendleton was an American militiaman during the War of 1812. In August 1814, he was part of a unit of militia assigned to General Tobias Stansbury's Fifth Regiment. However, thanks to the confusion leading up to the Britsh attack on Washington, Pendleton and his unit were left alone on the road between Washington and Baltimore. Here, he encountered Lt. Patrick Driscol, Pvt. Anthony McParland, and freedman Henry Crowell. Driscol decided to "reassign" the unit to his command.
Pendleton's unit followed Houston's party to the Capitol building, where they began fortifying the building in advance of the British attack. Pendleton participated in the Battle of the Capitol in the hours that followed.
For his valor, Pendleton was promoted to lieutentant. He was part of Houston's expedition to reinforce Andrew Jackson in New Orleans in December, 1814.
