Nationality: England
Occupation: Police Officer, former mercenary

Jonathan Smith was an English mercenary in the employ of Count Tilly's early part of the Thirty Years' War. Later on, he and his partner Wilhelm Kramer joined Grantville's police force. Both had been on the night shift and had just transferred to days.

In 1634, Smith and Kramer were investigating a supposed child kidnapping of Crystal and Zachary Cooper. While interviewing the children's grandparents Old Tommy and Gladys Cooper, the officers were skeptical of there being an actual kidnapping in which Kramer commented that Tiffany - mistaking her over her sister Crystal - may probably be seeing a boyfriend. The latter comment infuriated the Cooper's in which Gladys took steps in chasing the officers with a broom. Fortunately, Smith and Kramer had called Officers Jurgen Neubert and Marvin Tipton who arrived at the scene and stopped the fiasco with Gladys. Both Smith and Kramer explained the situation with Neubert and Tipton, which Smith regarded Gladys as a crazy woman. The officer's duty were then taken over by Neubert and Tipton, which the investigation revealed that Smith and Kramer's presumption on a non-existing kidnapping was true: the children were on a school field trip at Buffalo Creek. Smith and Kramer were told by Tipton to head back to the police station to go back to work while he and Neubert checked Buffalo Creek. Smith consented and thanked Tipton for keeping Gladys control as he admitted he had a hard time to control his temper on the Coopers.
