Lawrence 'Larry' Mazzare was originally a Catholic priest from Grantville. After the Ring of Fire, Mazzare became an important adviser on sectarian matters to the various governments established by Grantville. He was appointed the United States of Europe's ambassador to the Most Serene Republic of Venice. In 1634, after acting as Galileo's defender, he was elevated to "His Eminence the Cardinal-Protector of the United States of Europe" by Pope Urban VIII. As Cardinal Protector of Europe he reached out to various parishes and bishiprics. Before returning to Italy, it is revealed that he has connections with the father general. During the Stearns administration, Cardinal Mazzare was contacted to consult on the upheaval in the Papal States.

After Pope Urban VIII is forced to flee, Mazzare leaves to meet the Pope. They escape and leave to hide. Mazzare debates Cardinal Luke Wadding before coming under attack. Mazzare defends Pope Urban VIII. He accompanies Urban to Burgandy. During the Winter in 1635 he and Pope Urban VIII watched the movie "It's a Wonderful Life."

In 1636 He and Pope Urban held a colloquy and invited many other theologians. Mazzare described the procedings as people discussing the political fall out from the exile of Pope Urban VIII from Rome.

Mazzare had to rename his church from "Saint Vincent de Paul" to St. Mary's as Vincent de Paul was still alive at that time.

Mazzare spent his free time fixing car engines and discussing theological matters with his friend, Methodist Reverend Simon Jones.

Irene's death during the Croat raid on Grantville has impacted Mazzare, convincing him that the religious quarrels and corruption must be stopped.
