Mathilde Wiegert came from the Palatinate and was driven into exile when the Thirty Years' War began. She and along with her cousin Inga became prostitutes in Jena in order to support themselves and their family. There she met and became infatuated with Joachim von Thierbach, one of the leading members of the Committees of Correspondence.
