Nat Davis owned the largest machine shop in Grantville. After the Ring of Fire, his business became especially important, although he conceded that he had very little steel in his shop at the town meeting held in Grantville High School. When Mike Stearns was elected chairman of the town's emergency committee, he selected Nat Davis for his cabinet. Stearns thought another shop-owner, Ollie Reardon, would be easier to work with, but Reardon's shop was the smallest in town.
At the first cabinet meeting, Davis confirmed that while the various shops in town could build many necessary parts, far more specialized parts were out of their league.
