Ryan Baker was a Grantville high school student who was stranded in the 17th century after the Ring of Fire. After the ROF, Ryan was forced to moved in with his father and stepmother Dayna Shockley as his biological mother was left up-time. He graduated in 1633, did his basic and one year in the full-time military, didn't moved back with his family and had a job as a trainee at the Grantville-Rudolstadt-Saalfeld Railroad and Tramway Corporation.

On May, 1634 Ryan met Magdalena Heunisch while getting a drink. Ryan learned that she was an war orphan and offered her to live in Mitch Hobbs' parents' empty house that he was staying. Eventually Ryan fell in love with Magdalena-whom he called 'Meg'. She became pregnant, and the two decided to marry. However, before a wedding could take place, Baker was told by Magdalena's associate Teacher Muselius that as Meg was a a Lutheran, Baker must convert to that faith. Ryan took excruciating month-long steps in his conversion. He'd had taken a marriage license for three weeks, just in case Magdalena prepares to give birth and even called the Mayor Henry Dreeson, who had agreed to run over to the hospital and marry them off before their child showed up, in an emergency. On April, 1635, Ryan married Magdalena.
