Susanna Allegretti was an apprentice seamstress originally from Tuscany, and more recently from the Tyrol. The most junior of Frau Stecher's senior apprentices. She had the highest recommendations—daughter of Duchess Claudia own seamstress, and stepdaughter of the head court tailor in Tyrol. At eighteen, she had already acquired all the fundamentals for a successful career in luxury and couture clothing, but would benefit from two or three more years of experience at an even more distinguished court.
In 1634, Allegretti was in the employ of the household of Ferdinand II, working under head seamstress Frau Stecher. Stecher was a spy for the Habsburg factotums keeping an eye on the Archduchess Maria Anna of Austria. Nonetheless, Allegretti and Maria Anna managed to form a relationship, and she became a part of Maria Anna's trusted circle. Before leaving Munich, Maria Anna told Susanna that her true destination was Brussels, and charged Susanna with assisting her advisor and friend, Doña Mencia de Mendoza in getting to safety.
She later connected with Marc Cavriani, and the two traveled from Munich to the Swiss canton of Basel, with Susanna disguised as a boy. After escaping from a mercenary officer who wanted to capture them to get Maria Anna to Bernard of Saxe-Weimar, the two are held in custody.
