The Tennessee River is the largest tributary of the Ohio River. It is approximately 652 miles long and is located in the southeastern United States in the Tennessee Valley. The river was once popularly known as the Cherokee River, among other names. The river runs through the states of Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, and Kentucky.

In June, 1814, the Tennessee River became the site of a running battle between a group of Chickasaw and a group of Cherokee led ostensibly by John Ross. The Cherokee were to be part of Sam Houston's expedition to Washington. The Cherokees ultimate won the confrontation.
